This was a real departure for me. This drawing is nearly entirely hand-made – the only difference between the version you see here and the physical drawing is the digitally-inserted gray background tone.
The source material for this was a New Yorker article about soldiers in Iraq – John Hendrix asked us to create an illustration for it for our final project. The actual drawing is on 18×24 in Bristol board, and was done in ink with pens and brushes. Unlike most of my work, I skipped thumbnailing and went right to a final pencil sketch, then inked directly on that sketch.
