A school assignment – a New Yorker movie review-style illustration for J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek.
Once I’d settled on an idea, this one came together pretty naturally. I was initially pretty resistant to breaking up the flat planes of color, but I was eventually persuaded in favor of the shadows and highlights you see in the final piece. Here’s a brief breakdown of the illustration from sketch to color:
